How to Share Your School Calendar Fundraiser in Canvas Announcements (Step by Step)

Share a school calendar fundraiser in a Canvas course announcement with the Calendar Fundraiser app

Families read Canvas announcements. Here is how teachers post your calendar fundraiser there: copy the ready-made announcement with no app at all, or use the Calendar Fundraiser app to insert a calendar card, and show the calendar in the course menu.

Short answer: Teachers can post your calendar fundraiser in a Canvas course announcement two ways. Copy the ready-made announcement and QR code from your campaign dashboard (no app needed), or, if your school adds the Calendar Fundraiser app for Canvas, click its button in the editor to insert a calendar card with its picture.

Why Canvas announcements work

Families and students already get Canvas announcements by email and in the Canvas app. A calendar card in the class announcement reaches them where they read school news, with no extra newsletter or flyer to chase.

Option 1: no app, two minutes

  1. On your campaign dashboard, open the Team QR Code tab.
  2. Under Post in a Canvas announcement, choose Copy the announcement and QR code to attach.
  3. In Canvas, open the course, choose Announcements, then + Announcement.
  4. Paste the text, attach the QR code, and post.

That works in every Canvas course today. Send the steps to teachers along with your calendar link.

Option 2: the Calendar Fundraiser app

The app adds a Calendar Fundraiser button to the Canvas editor and an optional course menu link.

1
Your Canvas admin adds the app once

Admin → Developer Keys → + LTI Key

Method: Enter URL

https://calendarfundraiser.com/api/lti/config

Then turn the key on and add the app to the school's account by its Client ID. Canvas sends us no student names or emails.

A teacher opens a new announcement

Announcements → + Announcement

Students pick a date right inside Canvas. The teacher enables the link in Settings → Navigation and chooses the calendar once.

For the teacher

  1. Start a new announcement (or page).
  2. Open the editor's Apps button (the plug icon) and choose Calendar Fundraiser.
  3. Paste the calendar link or join code and choose Find. Check the calendar and choose Insert into Canvas.
  4. Post. Students and families see the calendar card with a Pick a date link.

For the Canvas administrator (once)

  1. Admin, then Developer Keys, then + Developer Key, then + LTI Key.
  2. Method Enter URL, then paste the configuration link from our Canvas page. Save and turn the key On.
  3. Copy the key's Client ID. In Admin, Settings, Apps, View App Configurations, choose + App, By Client ID, and paste it.

Show the calendar in the course menu

A teacher can turn on Calendar Fundraiser in the course's Settings, then Navigation. The first time they open it, they paste the calendar link once; after that, students open the calendar inside Canvas and pick a date.

Student privacy

The app is installed with Canvas's anonymous privacy level and asks for no extra permissions. Canvas sends no names, emails or grades. We learn only whether the person is a teacher, so only teachers can insert a card or choose a course's calendar. The card itself contains only the public calendar link and picture.
